HONIARA, Solomon Islands (July 18, 2001 - Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation/PINA Nius Online)---The Peoplefirst Network, PFnet, is planning to set up two remote demonstration e-mail stations in the outer islands of the Solomons.

The locations identified as suitable for the field trials are Rennell-Bellona Provincial Station at Tingoa, Rennell, and Sasamunga Telekoms office, South Choiseul. Both are existing communications centers.

Consultant David Leeming said the reasons why these sites are proposed is because they both have solar power facilities.

Mr. Leeming added that field trials are needed to prove the technology, test and perfect the operational procedures and demonstrate the viability of the concept to donors.

He said the trial also is being conducted to raise awareness in rural communities of the project’s potential benefits and to generate demand and publicity for it.
