NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (July 25, 2001 - PIDP/CPIS)---The AusAID Tonga Fisheries Project is now ready for implementation after being revised to address current changes in the fisheries industry.

According to the Government Information Unit, the integrated sectoral development and resource management project will "improve the welfare of the people of Tonga through the sustainable development and management of living marine resources, with special attention to remote and disadvantaged communities."

The four-year project focuses attention on the following areas:

The initiation of the project was made following a joint review of the fisheries sector in Tonga by AUSAID and the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

The government subsequently endorsed the project and the findings of the Tonga Fisheries Sector Review and recommended to the Ministry of Fisheries that it further develop the priorities identified.

The project will assist in removing significant constraints to the sustainable exploitation of fisheries and will improve domestic supplies and exports, while improving the management of resources at risk.
