HONIARA, Solomon Islands (July 24, 2001 – Radio Australia)---The Solomon Islands Music Federation has appealed to the government and businesses in the capital to help further develop the country’s music industry.

The federation’s president, Placid Walekwate, made the appeal in Honiara during a presentation ceremony following July’s live band contest.

Mr. Walekwate said that the federation has seen improvement in the country’s standard of music during the past six months through the presentation of public musical concerts.

The federation now plans to establish provincial music associations, he said, to assist with the promotion and further development of musicians in the provinces.

He appealed to the government and business community to support the development of music to a point where it can bring in foreign currency, thereby contributing to the Melanesian nation’s economy.
