APACE is a non-government organization (NGO) focusing on micro-hydro and food security community development programs in developing countries north of Australia. Stephen Johnston is a founding member of APACE and an adjunct professor on the Faculty of Engineering, University of Technology, Sydney. From 1991 to 1996, he was head of the School of Mechanical Engineering. He is particularly interested in the philosophy, politics, and appropriateness of technology. His most recent book is Engineering and Society: Challenges of Professional Practice (2000, Prentice Hall).
