LETTER TO THE EDITOR

September 21, 2001

Greetings. I am an almost daily visitor to the PI Report and thank you very much for a fine resource.

I notice that the flag of the USA is now flying near the top of the page. You do not explain why, but presumably it is because you are based in a State of the USA and your Government has announced that it is about to embark on a war against terrorists and the nations from which they come.

I am sure you realize that not everyone in the Pacific region is in favor of wars in which huge numbers of people inevitably die or suffer in other ways. Your flying the USA flag on the page, in a web site based in a university (not a government agency) and targeted to many nations (not just to Americans), seems to me part of the jingoism that enflames war and causes the killings. Surely, in our region, we must work for peace, not war?

Could you consider removing the fluttering flag from the page? If you feel the need to do something in response to the awful terrorist attacks last week, what about an appeal to stop the killings and enhance the possibility of peace?

Many thanks,
