PRICES STABLE, SAYS FRENCH POLYNESIA PRESIDENT FLOSSE

PAPE‘ETE, Tahiti, French Polynesia (September 24, 2001 - Oceania Flash/SPC)---French Polynesia's President Gaston Flosse, while opening the budget session of the Territorial Assembly last Thursday, said prices in the French territory had never been so stable for so long, RFO reports.

During his opening session speech, Flosse noted that prices had increased by a 1.1 percent average for the past four years.

Mr. Flosse also announced the introduction of new taxes, including a value added tax (VAT).

Other new taxes will be imposed on sugar, in order to finance a new health fund, on all imports for an environment fund, and on all new cars for road improvements.
