SINGH IS FIJI’S OPPOSITION LEADER

SUVA, Fiji Islands (October 6, 2001 – Fiji Sun/Abridged)---The President, Ratu Sir Josefa Iloilo, yesterday used his deliberate judgement and appointed National Federation Party candidate Prem Singh as the Leader of the Opposition.

An elated Mr. Singh said he looked forward to the big challenge, which lay ahead of him and was prepared to take up his responsibilities.

His appointment was confirmed yesterday afternoon after he got his letter from Government House.

Although Ratu Josefa had used powers vested in him and appointed Mr. Chaudhry as Opposition leader on Wednesday, he (Mr. Chaudhry) declined the offer, stressing that his party should be entitled to positions in the Laisenia Qarase-led government.
