JAKARTA (October 7, 2001 – Jakarta Post/Kabar-Irian)---Thousands of elementary and junior high school students in Kemtuk Gresy district of Jayapura regency in remote Irian Jaya province badly need bus transportation to take them to school, reports said on Sunday.

"Students have to walk dozens of kilometers every day (to go to school) because of lack of transportation," Kemtuk Gremsy district chief Delila Giay said in Genyem town on Sunday as quoted by Antara.

As a result, the pupils could not concentrate on their study because they were already too tired when they arrived at school, she said.

She called on the local administration to act on their previous promise to provide school buses for the children.

"The administration must not make a promise they cannot keep," Delila said.
