PAPE‘ETE, Tahiti, French Polynesia (October 18, 2001 – Tahitipresse)---An unattended piece of luggage was discovered Thursday in the departure area of Tahiti Faa‘a International airport.

After evacuation of the airport and many unsuccessful calls to the apparent owner of the luggage, Nedex (a military organization charged with dealing with explosives) intervened.

The bag "was neutralized" by a controlled explosion.

It contained only personal effects.

Half an hour later, a woman from Rarotonga arrived. She came to pick up her bag, which she had left unattended while waiting to board her plane.

She had not taken notice of the "Vigipirate" security plan implemented at all airports in the French territory following the September 11 terrorist attacks in United States.
