NEWS RELEASE November 1, 2001

CONGRESSMAN UNDERWOOD PRESSES BUSH ADMINISTRATION FOR GUAM'S INCLUSION IN ECONOMIC RELIEF

Congressman Robert A. Underwood today met with Interior officials to make the case for Guam's inclusion in the Bush Administration's unemployment insurance package and the President's expanded new National Emergency Grant initiative, and with Labor officials for immediate assistance for Guam.

"We're hoping the first thing they do is find a way to support our efforts. The economic stimulus package is going to be decided over the course of the next two to three weeks, and we need to get on the Administration's radar screen for that," the Congressman said, adding that the recent visit of the delegation from the Guam Legislature was helpful.

"Ours is a multi-faceted effort, not just a one-shot deal. We now have to go back to the administrators and managers who have direct management of the programs."

From the Interior Department, Congressman Underwood met with Mr. Chris Kearney, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Affairs, and Mr. Nikolao "Nik" Pula, Acting Director, Office of Insular Affairs. From the Labor Department, he met with Mr. Tevi Troy, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy; Mr. David Dye, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Administration; Ms. Erika Baum, Special Assistant, Employment and Training Administration.

"They're the ones who manage these grants," Underwood said. "We're trying to make direct impact on the appropriate people, and as we do that, we are also continuing to have our meetings here on the Hill, with both the House and Senate staffers and members."
