SUVA, Fiji Islands (November 11, 2001 - Fiji's Daily Post/PINA Nius Online)---A high-powered delegation from China has arrived for a Fiji visit. It is led Li Ruihuan, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and the fourth highest-ranking leader in China.

Fiji's Ambassador to China, Luke Ratuvuki, said China " has poured millions of dollars in aid into Fiji with the most recent being the multi-million dollar funding for a new sporting complex, a Memorandum of Understanding to improve our agricultural resources, and the donation of funds for the upgrading of the sound system at Parliament House. They have also assisted the Fiji Military Forces with some equipment."

Fiji has opened an embassy in Beijing as part of the Look North foreign policy adopted following last year's coup crisis, during which Australia and New Zealand imposed so-called "smart" sanctions, which Australia, but not New Zealand, now has lifted.
