HONIARA, Solomon Islands (November 14, 2001 – Radio Australia)---Next month’s national election aimed at restoring democracy in the Solomon Islands will be contested by 328 candidates seeking 50 seats in Parliament.

Seven political parties have entered candidates, including deposed prime minister Bartholomew Ulufa'alu and current Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.

Last year, the government was overthrown in a coup.

A two-year ethnic battle between Guadalcanal and Malaita islanders over jobs and land rights has largely destroyed the nation’s economy.
