PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (November 21, 2001 - Samoa News/PINA Nius Online)---The American Samoa Community College's Land Grant Division has ended its Arbor Week celebration with special recognition of the coconut tree, or "niu."

The coconut tree is sometimes known as the "Tree of Life" in the Pacific region because of its multiple uses and benefits.

"Respect The Forest Of American Samoa" was the theme of this year’s Arbor Week celebration, which placed particular emphasis on caring for local flora and the eradication of invasive plants threatening local rainforests.

Forestry program manager Sheri Mann told the assembly: Planting a tree does make a major difference.

One planting per person would be a vital contribution to a clean-air environment and to saving birds, she said, as well as halting soil erosion.
