SOUTH PACIFIC REGIONAL ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME (SPREP) Apia, Samoa

PRESS RELEASE September 29, 2001 Phnom Penh, Cambodia

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT MEETING

Pacific island delegates emerged from an important Asia Pacific meeting on sustainable development today, satisfied that a "Platform" document reflects a number of crucial priorities for the Pacific region.

"It was an intense series of negotiations but we were all pleased to come out of the talks with a positive outcome for the region," said Mrs. Karibaiti Taoaba of Kiribati, Chair and Spokesperson of the Pacific’s preparation for the world summit in Johannesburg, September 2002.

"However, this is just the beginning. We have much to do in terms of maintaining our strong voice and concerns during the forthcoming Preparatory meetings for the World Summit," she added.

The Asia/Pacific Regional Platform document, negotiated in Phnom Penh, will be a key part of the preparatory process in the lead up to Johannesburg where global priorities will be negotiated and adopted for the next 10 years.

That is why it was so important for Pacific delegates in Phnom Penh to ensure that the Platform document reflected the issues and concerns of the Pacific, says Mrs. Taoaba.

The priorities promoted by the Pacific at the Cambodia meeting were identified in the Pacific Submission developed at the Multi-stakeholders at Apia in September. They include:

·        ocean management,

·        climate change,

·        island vulnerability,

·        sustainable energy,

·        conservation and management of natural resources,

·        people’s health and governance issues,

·        capacity building, and

·        financial resources for sustainable development.

The World Summit in Johannesburg, 2002 will review 10 years of progress to achieve sustainable development based on the Earth Summit outcomes in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and identify specific time-bound initiatives that are essential to sustainable development in the next decade.

Pacific island countries participating included: Cook Islands, FSM, Kiribati, Niue, Palau, PNG, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu.

Coordinating the contributions by the Pacific delegates were key advisors from the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) – Forum Secretariat, SPREP, and SOPAC.
