SUVA, Fiji Islands (November 30, 2001 – Radio Australia)---The number of HIV/AIDS infections in Fiji has risen to 77 -- nine more than the number recorded last year.

Radio Australia correspondent Ofa Kaukimoce reports.

"According to the Fiji Medical Association, indigenous Fijians continue to top the list of HIV/AIDS infection.

"Coordinator and counselor Wilson Ckrodyed says that of the 77 people infected with the deadly virus, 57 are Fijians, 16 -Indo-Fijians and four from other races.

"Twelve people, he said, have died from AIDS.

"Mr. Ckrodyed further revealed there are five cases of babies infected with AIDS transmitted by their mothers

"He added that in Fiji, HIV/AIDS is most common among people between the ages of 20 and 29, followed by the 30 and 39 age category.
