KOROR, Palau (December 5, 2001 –Radio Australia)---Five Chinese nationals have been deported from Palau after becoming the victims of an illegal job recruitment scheme.

The Chinese workers entered Palau with tourist visas and paid at least $12,000 each to a Chinese woman who promised them jobs.

However, foreigners who enter Palau as tourists are not permitted to work in the country.

Immigration officer Joseph Giramur said the Chinese woman who "gypped" the workers held a work permit that expired this month and was deported along with her victims.

He said that before they could be deported, the Chinese nationals were provided a week’s shelter in jail. They had run out of money and were forced out of their hotel.
