YAREN, Nauru (December 12, 2001 – Radio Australia)---An Independent MP in Nauru has likened the latest asylum seeker deal with Australia to prostitution.

Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has announced that Nauru will accept another 400 boatpeople for processing as refugees, taking to 1,200 the number of asylum-seekers in the two camps there.

In return, Nauru will receive another US$ 5 million to be spent on education, health, water facilities and police training.

Nauruan MP Anthony Audoa says Nauru is prostituting itself: "I don' t know what is behind the mentality of the Australian leaders but I don't think it is right.

" A country that is desperate with its economy, and you try to dangle a carrot in front of them, of course, just like a prostitute, if you dangle money in front of her, you think she will not accept it? Of course she will, because she's desperate."
