JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya, Indonesia (December 8, 2001 – Antara/Kabar-Irian)---A group of former political prisoners here is calling on President Megawati Sukarnoputri to conduct an open dialog with Papuans on their political demands.

The group said such a dialogue would be more meaningful to Papuans than the president's intention to formally present them with a document containing the law on Papua's special autonomy.

Saul J. Bombay, the group's spokesman, told the press here Saturday, his group's view had been conveyed in writing to President Megawati, as well as other central government and provincial officials.

Bombay said Papuans would ignore the president's scheduled visit to the province on December 22, if she came only to hand over the law as a present for Eid el Fitr, Christmas and the New Year.
