SUVA, Fiji Islands (December 16, 2001 - The Fiji Times/PINA Nius Online)---Fiji coup front man George Speight does not want to run in the special election called as a result of his dismissal from the House of Representatives, his brother said.

Elder brother Sam Speight conveyed the message to a Conservative Alliance Tailevu branch meeting following Speaker Ratu Epeli Nailatikau's ruling that Speight's seat is vacant because he missed two consecutive sessions of Parliament.

Speight is being held in an island prison off Suva and faces treason and other charges following last year's coup crisis. He has been refused bail and prison authorities have refused to allow him to attend Parliament.

Speight's supporters expressed their dissatisfaction with Ratu Epeli, saying they exercised their constitutional and democratic rights in electing Speight to represent them.

Sam Speight told them his brother asked them to give their full support to whomever is chosen as the candidate to stand in his place.
