PAPE'ETE, French Polynesia (December 17, 2001 - Oceania Flash/SPC)---Fiji-based French Ambassador Jean-Pierre Vidon is in French Polynesia for a familiarization tour, Tahitipresse reports.

During his visit, which began last week, Vidon, who is accredited to Fiji, Tonga, Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia and Nauru, met top officials in the capital of Pape'ete, including territorial President Gaston Flosse and newly arrived French High Commissioner Michel Mathieu.

Talks focused on regional affairs and the potential for increased cooperation between the French Pacific territory and the Pacific Island independent countries and territories.

Vidon is due back in Fiji December 21, the French Embassy in Suva said.

His predecessor, Michel Jolivet, earlier this year became head of a new International Relations Department in French Polynesia.
