NOUMÉA, New Caledonia (December 19, 2001 - Oceania Flash/SPC)---The average income in the French territory of New Caledonia currently stands at around 255,000 French Pacific Francs (CFP), or about US$ 1,930 per month, the daily newspaper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reports, quoting the territorial institute of statistics' latest survey.

The figure was lower in the primary sector (mainly agriculture and farming), however, with 130,000 CFP, as opposed to 273,000 in the tertiary, service-oriented sector.

The figures announced by statistical institute ITSEE result from the total salaries paid monthly (170 billion CFP, about US$ 28 billion), divided by the average number of employees -- 55,489.

Discrepancies also appear according to the workers’ geographical locations: employees are better paid in the Southern Province (261,000 CFP monthly on average), especially in and around the capital, Nouméa (264,586 CFP). In the Northern and Islands provinces, salaries are lower (respectively 200,694 and 216,473 CFP).

Also, women are paid 19 percent less, on average, than men in similar positions.
