SECRETARIAT OF THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY (SPC) Nouméa, New Caledonia Suva, Fiji Islands

Pacific Women's Bureau

Press Release January 10, 2002

The Socio-Economic division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community will soon welcome its new Women's Development Advisor, following the recent departure of the Pacific Women's Bureau head Amelia Siamomua.

Siamomua has taken up leadership of the United Nations Fund for Women, UNIFEM, in its Pacific office.

She left in December for Fiji to rejoin her family, and took up her new post with UNIFEM this month.

Siamomua led the Bureau through a major review of its activities, and the 8th meeting for Pacific women, held in September 2001. The Bureau also underwent a name change to become the Pacific Women's Bureau, and strengthened its links, under her management, with other regional agencies and projects for women.

Acting head of the Bureau is currently the Deputy Director General of SPC, Yves Corbel, who is also leading the selection committee for the new advisor. Applications for the post will close next week, and its expected a new incumbent will be announced by early February.

Corbel says the new Advisor and her team will "bear the very challenging responsibility of transforming the aspirations expressed by the 8th Women's Conference held in Nouméa in 2001, into proper activities guided by a strategic plan that she will have to develop. The Bureau is at a crossroads and needs skills, commitment, and leadership to fulfill its role in the new millennium."
