GOING TO SCHOOL IN THE AUSTRAL ISLANDS IS A REAL ADVENTURE

PAPE‘ETE, Tahiti, French Polynesia (January 10, 2002 - Tahitipresse)---The Territorial schooner "Tahiti Nui" is currently on a tour of the Austral Islands.

The ship will bring back to boarding school 283 children who spent Christmas holidays in their home islands. Some of the students will go all the way to Tahiti, wile others will be transferred to bigger islands near their homes.

It takes one full day for the "Tahiti Nui" to reach Rimatara, the closest island to Tahiti.

Three of the five inhabited islands of the Australs archipelago do not have airports yet.

The minister for Education, Nicolas Sanquer, said recently that US$ 6.1 million will be spent for school transportation during the 2001-2002 school year.
