AVARUA, Rarotonga, Cook Islands (January 25, 2002 – Radio Australia)---The average annual inflation rate rose 8.7 per cent in the last quarter of 2001.

New government statistics show that the "underlying" rate of inflation is also on the increase and is now said to stand at 9.1 per cent, a figure that excludes items that have fluctuating prices, such as locally produced fruit and vegetables.

The latest figures are not good news for the government, which predicted that the consumer price index inflation figure would be under four percent for fiscal year 2001-2002.
