TARAWA, Kiribati (January 31, 2002 – Radio Australia)---A new plan is being implemented by the government of Kiribati to prevent foreign criminal elements from getting a toehold in the North Pacific nation.

The Combined Law Agency Group is being established to head off drug smuggling, money laundering and other illegal international crimes.

The Kiribati group is modeled after a similar agency in New Zealand.

It will draw its members from several law enforcement agencies, including the police, customs, the tax office, immigration, fisheries and agriculture.
