PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (January 30, 2002 – Radio Australia)---The Papua New Guinea conservation group Forest Watch is calling for a high level inquiry into alleged links between logging companies and the illegal trade in guns and drugs.

The call follows a claim by a high-ranking police officer in the North Fly district that people are traveling to a local logging camp there to trade marijuana for high-powered weapons.

The police officer said he believes the guns are coming from Australia and are being brought up the Fly River on empty log barges.

He said the guns are then traded for drugs that are brought down into Western province from the Southern Highlands.

Local police call the logging camp a "free trade zone" because of the smuggling activities being carried out there.

PNG MOBILE FORCE POLICE END STANDOFF

Port Moresby (January 31, 2002 - The National/PINA Nius Online)---The standoff between members of the Special Services Division and Papua New Guinea Police Headquarters ended after Commissioner Joseph Kupo met with the men.

Following a two-hour meeting, Mobile Squad members, Mr. Kupo, his two deputies, and other senior officers shook hands and agreed to reconcile, forgive and forget.

The protesting policemen said the situation would not have happened if they had received quick responses to their concerns over conditions.

They said they would pay for any damages caused during their protest and that they would invite Mr. Kupo and his senior officers to a 'mumu' soon, to reconcile in the true Melanesian way.
