SUVA, Fiji Islands (February 5, 2002 - FM96/PINA Nius Online)---Fiji's Land Transport Authority has called on government to declare kava a drug.

Authority spokesperson Ratu Eroni Volavola said they intend to charge people with a crime for driving when "grog doped" from drinking too much kava.

However, drivers can only be taken to court if appropriate legislation is implemented, he said.

Volavola said they are still looking at ways to test drivers to prove they are driving under the influence of kava.

He said the issue needs to be looked at with urgency because everyone is aware that excessive consumption of kava leads to the slowing down of people's reflexes.

People driving in this state are dangerous, he added.
