ARKANSAS: THE MARSHALL ISLANDS’ STATE OF INEBRIATION?

MAJURO, Marshall Islands (January 18, 2002 – The Marshall Islands Journal)---Marshall Islanders living in Springdale, Arkansas, USA were the third largest group arrested for driving while intoxicated, according to a police report issued recently for 2000.

Of the 565 total arrests for drunk driving, 17 were Marshall Islanders -- or about one in 33.

The police statistics included gender and race breakdown. Caucasians accounted for 322 arrests and Hispanics for 221.  Marshallese were the next largest category.

The average alcohol level in the bloodstream of the 17 Marshallese arrested in 2000 was .14 percent, compared to the overall average of .16 percent, according to the police information that was carried on the Marshall Islands Internet website, www.yokwe.net.
