MAJURO, Marshall Islands (January 25, 2002 – The Marshall Islands Journal)---The MISSA (Marshall Islands Social Security Administration) board has unanimously approved transferring authority for the Health Fund to the Ministry of Health and Environment.

The move was taken at a Social Security board meeting late last week.

Faced with the ongoing inability to meet the RMI government’s costs of the medical referral and medical supply costs through Health Fund taxes, the MISSA board decided that the best course of action was to return administration of the fund to the appropriate authorities within the government.

MISSA administrator Saane Aho indicated that the resolution was approved by all board members. She said that like the Health Care Revenue Fund, authority for which was returned late last year to the Ministry of Health, the Health Fund management would most likely go to the Ministry.

She said that MISSA would probably still collect the Health Fund tax and remit it to the proper entity until new arrangements were worked out.
