PAPEETE, Tahiti, French Polynesia (February 24, 2002 – Tahitipresse/PINA Nius Online)---Easter Island Mayor Petero Edmunds Paoa has announced that the island -- Polynesia’s easternmost outpost in the Pacific Ocean -- will be formally twinned with the city of Pirae on Tahiti in June.

Through the agreement, Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, will be able to expand ties with its Polynesian and other Pacific Islands neighbors, Mayor Paoa said.

Tahiti’s Pirae has about 10,000 inhabitants, while Easter Island’s population numbers about 3,000.
