PORT VILA, Vanuatu (March 16, 2002 - VBTC/PINA Nius Online)---Vanuatu's general election will be held on May 2.

The head of state, Father John Bani, signed the declaration of the general election, according to the Electoral Office.

Vanuatu currently has 52 seats in Parliament, representing 17 constituencies.

The outgoing members are now due to receive their severance pay.

Former Opposition Leader Barak Tame Sope said the members have been notified of the arrangement by the Parliament Secretariat.

After receiving their pay, members are expected to vacate the Offices of Parliament.

Each of the Members of Parliament who served a full four-year term will receive 1.9 million vatu (US$ 13,222).

The payment will cost the country over 96 million vatu (US$ 668,058).
