PRESS STATEMENT March 18, 2002

Twenty one more scholarships were awarded today under the Taiwan/ROC-Pacific Islands Forum Scholarship Scheme.

The awards were presented by Mr. Fu-Tien Liu, Representative, Trade Mission of Taiwan/ROC in Fiji, during a ceremony at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva.

Ten of the awards went to nationals from Fiji; three from the Solomon Islands; two from Samoa; two from Tonga; and one each from Niue, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Their Diploma or Degree programs are being taken up at tertiary institutions in Fiji. These include Central Queensland University (Suva campus), Fiji College of Agriculture, Fiji School of Medicine, and the University of the South Pacific.

This brings the total to 53 awards for individual students and seven short-term projects being run by regional organisations, since the scheme began.

The scholarships are possible under a US$ 1.5 million grant from Taiwan/ROC for a three-year period 2000-2002. There will be a review of the scholarship scheme in mid-2002.
