YASHICHIKA IWASA, AUTHOR OF TAHITIAN-JAPANESE DICTIONARY, VISITING TAHITI

PAPE‘ETE, Tahiti, French Polynesia (March 31, 2002 – Tahitipresse)---Yashichika Iwasa, professor of linguistics at the University of Tokyo and head of the Institute of Anthropological and Linguistic research on Pacific Cultures, has been in Tahiti for the past week conducting research.

His current project, a Tahitian-Japanese dictionary, is to be published later this year.

Professor Iwasa is the author of several dictionaries and grammar books on Pacific Languages.

Preparations for the current volume began in 1973. "Language is my working tool," he said, and "this Tahitian-Japanese dictionary is my life’s work."

He will return to Tokyo April 1.
