Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands

April 2002

This is a newsletter that is intended to give those interested in an update on the Bikini Atoll Dive and Sports Fishing programs on a periodic basis.

The 2002 dive season is under way on Bikini Atoll. Like most tourism related operations the world over [following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S.], we are slightly off the great numbers of people we had visit Bikini last year, but we are optimistic that business will pick up during the second half of the season.

I just returned from my first "Fabio-less" visit to Bikini. I must say that Fabio did a great job in finding our new head divemaster and resort manager Tim Williams, and Tim, in turn, did a great job in hiring on Mike Dudas from West Chester, PA, to be his assistant. They are a great team with lots of wreck diving experience and they certainly made our week fun and enjoyable.

The resort is really looking good and the cook is the best one we have had so far. Moses Cama joined us for the second half of the season last year and he really does wonders with the food. I gained five pounds even after 12 decompression dives, and compared to the other guests from last week, I came out on the light side.

The University of Hawai‘i is doing a study about the possible expansion of our tourism program. We all know that involves better air service from Air Marshall Islands (AMI), but some other suggestions they have already made have been helpful, such as the compiling of demographic statistics for our operation.

We now have all redundant systems for our oxygen making machines and for our air compressors. We are currently in the process of making a new briefing room by where the office is, and we have added four more rooms on the beachfront.

There is a new sara shirt at the online store. By Monday I will also have this shirt in light blue available online:

Let me hear from you all and dive safe!
