PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (April 14, 2002 – Radio Australia)---Tonga's Defense Services will help provide emergency and rescue services for fautasi longboat races during American Samoa's Flag Day celebrations this week, the government has announced.

The Tongan patrol boat Vaka ‘o Ene ‘Afio Pangai carries a crew of 16.

Fautasi longboat races, with more than 40 rowers aboard each vessel, will highlight the Flag Day events Wednesday, commemorating the raising of the American flag over the South Pacific territory in 1900.

Governor Tauese Sunia said the Defense Services’ help symbolizes the growing cooperation and close friendship between Tonga and American Samoa.

American Samoa recently gave US$ 25,000 to Tonga to help with relief work in the kingdom's cyclone hit northern islands.
