KOROR, Palau (April 18, 2002 – Radio Australia)---A women's conference in Palau has voted for a 20-year moratorium on the harvest of marine turtles.

The motion has been referred to Palau's President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr.

Conference delegates said marine turtles were an important food source for the people of Palau.

However, they feared continuous harvesting could lead to the extinction of marine turtles, impacting on many ecosystems, including coral reefs, sea grass beds and open ocean.
