NEWS RELEASE April 23, 2002

The Solomon Islands People First Network, or PFnet, has been selected from over 100 high quality projects worldwide as a finalist in a competition organized by the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) and The Information for Development Program (InfoDev).

PFnet is a UNDP-established Information and Communications Technology project, which aims to facilitate rural communications and information flows across all communities in the Solomon Islands, particularly with respect to rural development and peace building.

It has already established two community-run rural email stations with another three coming online by June, and with over 25 planned nationally.

PFnet also runs the Internet Café in Honiara.

PFnet is a project of the Rural Development Volunteers Association and is affiliated with the Rural Development Division of the Ministry of Provincial Government and Rural Development.

The IICD assists developing countries to utilize the opportunities offered by information and communication technologies (ICTs) to realize sustainable development.

InfoDev began in September 1995 with the objective of addressing the obstacles facing developing countries in an increasingly information-driven world economy. It is a global grant program managed by the World Bank to promote innovative projects on the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for economic and social development, with a special emphasis on the needs of the poor in developing countries.

The IICD and InfoDev work in a partnership to hold the annual ICT Stories Competition. The winners of the 15 finalists will be announced in May and the winners will attend a meeting in Washington, USA, in June to present their "lessons learned" to the global ICT community.

The 15 finalists' submissions including PFnet's can be viewed from the IICD web site at www.iicd.org/stories/
