SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (May 13, 2002 - Marianas Variety/PINA Nius Online)---Members of the Northern Marianas news media will be allowed to sit in on regular Cabinet meetings, Governor Juan Babauta said.

Babauta said the decision to allow journalists to observe Cabinet meetings is a way to build trust between reporters and the administration.

He said the media will be informed about the specific proposals of each department or agency presented during the meetings.

However, the governor said journalists will not be allowed to attend "confidential meetings," particularly the Cabinet's executive sessions.

The governor's special assistant on federal affairs and policy matters, Sonja Artero, suggested the idea during a Cabinet meeting last month.

"We hope that the media, by being there, will report the information accurately to the public," Babauta said.

Reporters are not encouraged to ask questions during the Cabinet meeting, but they will be allowed to do so after the meeting.
