HAGÅTÑA, Guam (June 2, 2002 – Pacific Daily News/PINA Nius Online)---U.S. President George W. Bush has declared a major disaster in the Federated States of Micronesia, the Pacific Daily News reported.

It opens the door for federal funds to help the state of Yap recover from Typhoon Mintage, according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency press release.

Mintage ripped through the islands of the Federated States of Micronesia in early March, hitting Yap hardest. It destroyed tin and wooden homes, submerging roads in saltwater, flooding hotels and sending people there scurrying for shelter.

Traditional food sources, especially food gardens, were badly hit. Guam people have already sent help to their hungry neighbors on the Yap islands, about 550 miles southwest of Guam.

Yap officials previously described Mitag as the "most extensive" typhoon to strike the state in years.

The disaster declaration from Bush followed a state of emergency declaration from Yap's governor, Pacific Daily News reported.

With Bush's declaration comes the opportunity to apply for federal funding, which the Federated States of Micronesia gets through its Compact of Free Association with the United States.

Immediately after Bush's declaration, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials designated Yap and affected municipal governments as eligible for federal funding, Pacific Daily News said.

The agency will pay 75 percent of the approved costs to repair or replace public facilities damaged by the storm, the release said.

Funding also will be provided to pay part of the cost for the delivery of emergency food supplies to the remote islands and atolls of Eauripik, Elato, Ifalik, Lamotrek, Ngulu, Satawal and Woleai, the release said.

In addition, federal funds will be available for Micronesia on a cost-shared basis for approved projects that reduce future disaster risks.
