FRENCH POLYNESIA’S TAHOERAA MAJORITY PLEASED BY VOTING RESULTS

PAPE‘ETE, Tahiti, French Polynesia (June 4, 2002 – Tahitipresse)---French Polynesia President Gaston Flosse said Tuesday that he is pleased that the two Tahoeraa Huiraatira party candidates, Michel Buillard and Beatrice Vernaudon, had been elected to the French National Assembly during last Saturday’s polling.

He said both will join the future right-wing majority in France and this will benefit French Polynesia.

Flosse added that the right-wing majority supporting current French President Jacques Chirac will make approval of a new French Polynesia autonomy statute possible.

Also, he said, France will now send more funds to Tahiti to boost the territory’s economy.

The president stressed the fact that Saturday’s polling showed that the Tahoeraa Huiraatira party "was as strong as ever."
