BOOK DRIVE FOR MARSHALL ISLANDS SCHOOLS

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

June 21, 2002

Yokwe all,

It has recently been announced that the Marshallese government is in a position where they must severely cut their education budget.

Please see:

or

As a result, the adoptive parents, kids, former missionaries, ex-RMI residents and various other folks from the RMI-Kids group are trying to put together another book drive for the RMI Schools. We'd like to ask that others also chip in and assist if the can.

If you have suitable books, which include class texts and reference books, please consider sending them to one of the RMI public or private schools. For those mailing books from the U.S., Book Rate (ask for it specifically) is relatively cheap.

Keep an eye open for suitable books at library or school sales, and even garage sales or auctions. For those of you near Sacramento, someone from RMI-Kids tipped me off to The Sacramento Surplus Book Room. See: http://www.bookroom.org/

They act as a repository of schoolbooks and provide them cheap or free. June 29th, 2002, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., is their upcoming inventory clearing day and they will be giving away lots of schoolbooks to anyone who shows up. [They're at: 4121 Power Inn Road, Sacramento CA 95826; TEL: (916) 454-3459.]

We've been told that multiple copies of classroom texts would be especially welcome. I'm sure supplies wouldn't hurt either, but you'd probably pay parcel post rate to ship these, which is more than book rate. Also, if you have a spare CD Encyclopedia, toss it in. You usually get a new one with every PC, and the older ones gather dust.

I do not have addresses for schools on the other atolls, or other private schools, but would appreciate getting them.

There are threads about the book drive, and about everything else having to do with the Marshall Islands on the forums at Yokwe.Net. Feel free to post any new information there. See: http://www.yokwe.net/index.html

Parties who have assisted with books for the RMI in the past include RIF and Friends of the Pacific. See: http://www.rif.org/ and http://www.friendsofthepacific.org/

The Elloke Peim kin Yokwe Charity, of Costa Mesa, is looking at getting books shipped from their location. See: http://ellokepeim.yokwe.net/

Of course, unless you're nearby, you'd need to ship the books to them, and you might as well send them all the way to the Marshalls, as it is the same price. They are a wonderful contact for the local Marshallese community, though.

Friends run a charity that ships books to libraries in Ghana, and they've received a number of new classroom texts, which are not particularly needed in public libraries. Hence, they are kindly also assisting with these extra books. The Books for Africa Website (lots of nice photos) is http://www3.uakron.edu/src/DataServ/SocServ/Summit/Books_for_Africa.html

Feel free to contact me with any information, ideas, comments or the like.
