HALF OF KIRIBATI LIVES IN POVERTY

TARAWA, Kiribati (June 27, 2002 – Pacific Beat/Radio Australia)-----New research shows more than half the population of Kiribati, Hawaii’s closest international neighbor, is living in poverty.

The Asian Development Bank, as part of its new emphasis on poverty reduction in the Pacific, has set poverty lines for the first time in Kiribati, with separate levels for South Tarawa capital area and the outer islands.

The Bank's research shows between 50% to 69% of the total population are living in poverty.
