Pacific Islands Report Staff Writer Internship

The Pacific Islands Development Program at the East-West Center is excited to announce an opening for the Pacific Islands Report Staff Writer Intern position. As a Staff Writer Intern, you will play a crucial role in shaping narratives around current events, issues, and trends in the Pacific Islands region. We are seeking individuals with strong writing skills, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for journalistic storytelling.

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with journalistic writing and AP Style
  • General knowledge of the Pacific Islands region
  • Interest in journalism and Pacific current events
  • Open to constructive feedback and willingness to learn
  • Good research skills and ability to gather information from diverse sources
  • Enthusiastic about contributing to the mission of the Pacific Islands Development Program
  • Previous experience, such as in a school publication or blog, is a plus

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate creative and engaging story ideas
  • Conduct thorough research for accurate and well-informed articles
  • Interview relevant sources to gather information and quotes
  • Write clear, concise, and compelling news stories, manuscripts, or news briefs
  • Collaborate with editors for revisions and improvements
  • Adhere to deadlines and contribute to timely publication
  • Attend regular meetings to discuss assignments and engage in training sessions
  • Stay informed about current events, issues, and trends in the Pacific region
  • Maintain professional conduct in line with journalistic ethics
  • Actively participate in the overall success and growth of the Pacific Islands Report
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Desired Skills:

  • Proficiency in word processing and desktop publishing
  • Proficiency in using general office equipment
  • Experience with web publishing and WordPress
  • Proficiency in driving with a valid driver’s license

Work Details:

  • Building: Burns Hall, East-West Center
  • Work Schedule: Flexible, 9-5
  • Minimum Hours Per Week: 5
  • Maximum Hours Per Week: 20
  • Term: Semester Basis
