CHINESE WARSHIPS TO STOP IN PAPE'ETE NEXT MONTH

PAPE'ETE, French Polynesia (August 6, 2002 - Oceania Flash)---Next month, for the first time in the French Polynesia’s history, Chinese warships are scheduled to make a Pape‘ete courtesy call, the daily newspaper La Dépêche de Tahiti reports.

The two military vessels are an observation ship and its refueling tender.

Both are scheduled to arrive in the capital on September 1 for a two-day stopover.

Later this month, on August 16, Paris-based Chinese Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Zhao Jinjun is due in Pape'ete to prepare for the vessels' visit.
