SUVA, Fiji Islands (August 7, 2002 - FM96/PINA Nius Online)---Fiji Police are checking allegations that a woman known locally as the "Mafia Queen" is involved in getting Chinese nationals into the country.

Criminal Investigation Department director Emosi Vunisa said the matter came to light when two boatloads of illegal immigrants were recently discovered in Fiji waters.

Police discovered that they had fake travel documents. The discovery came amid growing public concern over the number of new Chinese people now in Fiji.

The so-called "Mafia Queen" is from China and has been at the center of a series of controversies and allegations in Fiji, including newspaper reports alleging she has powerful connections.
