MATA'UTU, Wallis and Futuna (August 8, 2002 - Oceania Flash)---The French Pacific territory of Wallis and Futuna has a new French administrator. He is 59-year-old Christian Job, RFO reports.

Job, until now first secretary at the office of the Prefect of Val-de-Marne (near Paris), was appointed by the French government on August 6.

He has a military background.

Last month, Wallis and Futuna celebrated the 41st anniversary of its French territory status.

Wallis and Futuna has a population of about 15,000 and is located northeast of Fiji.

On several administrative matters, it is dependent upon New Caledonia.

New Caledonia is home to a Wallisian and Futunian community of about 20,000, larger than in the home islands.

Last week, France sent a new permanent representative to New Caledonia, 62-year-old Daniel Constantin, who replaced outgoing Thierry Lataste.
