NAURU DETAINEES GRANTED TEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN PROTECTION

BRISBANE, Australia (August 7, 2002 – Radio Australia)---The Australian government says another group of refugees from the immigration processing center on the Pacific island of Nauru has now arrived in Australia.

The 16 women and 40 children were taken to the Queensland capital, Brisbane.

Acting immigration minister Daryl Williams said all have immediate family members in Australia and have been granted five-year temporary protection visas.

The latest group adds to the 60 people who have already come to Australia from the offshore processing centers in Nauru and Manus Island, Papua New Guinea.
