SUVA, Fiji Islands (August 20, 2002 – Radio Australia)---The Chinese government has warned Pacific nations against becoming too close to Taiwan.

China's Assistant Foreign Minister Zhou Wenzong says his government could not condone Taiwan's moves to establish economic and development ties with its official dialogue partners in the Pacific.

But Mr. Zhou says Beijing does not object to Taiwan's unofficial help to the region.

He was speaking after being briefed in Nadi on the outcome of the recently concluded Pacific Islands Forum summit.
