SUVA, Fiji Islands (August 31, 2002 – Radio Australia)---Hundreds of people from the Rotuma Islands gathered in the capital of Suva Friday to celebrate the appointment of one of their own as the new Chief Justice of Fiji.

Rotuma, which has a population of about 10,000 Polynesian people, is part of the Fiji Islands.

Justice Daniel Fatiaki is the first Rotuman to be appointed to the position by the Fijian government.

A commoner himself, Justice Fatiaki was carried into the celebration hall on a platform, a special treatment usually accorded only to high chiefs of Rotuma and the President of Fiji.
