NIUE ASSEMBLY FINALLY PASSES A BUDGET

ALOFI, Niue (August 31, 2002 – Radio New Zealand International)---After weeks of delay and an intense three days of debate, the Niue Assembly finally passed a new fiscal year operating budget Friday.

It trimmed a projected (US) $900,000 deficit to less than $700,000.

Premier Young Vivian said, "We have cut out all the capital items. We have cut out (government worker) allowances and overtime. We have reduced assistance to youth groups, women’s groups, sports."
